MIRA recovers USD31 million owed to State

Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has recovered USD31 million owed to the state in the second quarter of 2022.

The quarterly report published by MIRA shows that it recovered USD31 million through enforced collections in the second quarter. The amount includes USD14.6 million recovered under dunning, USD14.5 million recovered from dues clearance, USD1.9 million recovered through reminder calls and emails and USD32,000 recovered from legal action.

During the second quarter, MIRA issued notices to 774 non-filers and 739 non-payers and granted installment plans totalling USD31 million to 96 taxpayers. MIRA also provided the total arrears as of June 30. As such, the total amount of tax dues reaches USD332 million, which includes USD182 million in principal amount and USD149 million in fines. The total amount in non-tax dues reaches USD645 million, which includes USD201 million in principal amount and USD437 million in fines.

Furthermore, MIRA filed 108 court cases in the second quarter, of which seven judgments were passed in its favour and four were passed against it. Additionally, three cases were filed against MIRA during the period.
