MDP President says parliamentary system vote needs further discussions

President of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Mohamed Nasheed has said he withdrew the proposal to vote on establishing a parliamentary system in order to hold further discussions.

The most contentious topic at the MDP Congress was the vote to establish a parliamentary system in the Maldives. However, Nasheed withdrew his proposal before it reached the debate stage. He said that he held meetings with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih during the congress and concluded that further discussions are needed with party members.

Furthermore, Nasheed assured that differences within the party will be settled with discussions held between President Solih and the party branches and expressed confidence the party will be able to win the upcoming presidential election and continue serving the citizens for years to come. He also said the party will work towards more transparency and gaining more supporters, adding that Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail will work to resolve differences and strengthen the party.

Prior to the MDP Congress, President Solih called on Nasheed to withdraw the proposal to vote on establishing a parliamentary system in the Maldives.
