A new powerhouse has been brought into operation in Nadella, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, after 27 years. The new powerhouse started providing electricity to the residents of the island on August 4.
Speaking to PSM News, President of Nadella Island Council Mohamed Anshau said Nadella had faced challenges in providing electricity using a small powerhouse located within the community, which had caused a major public inconvenience due to the loud generators. The electricity generated from the old powerhouse was also unable to meet the increasing demand for power on the island with a population of over 1,100, he said.
The new powerhouse covers an area of 223.80 acres. However, the previous powerhouse in Nadella was 120 acres. The newly built powerhouse has a capacity of 538kW. The powerhouse is designed to accommodate three 400 kW generators.
The government has been relocating powerhouses away from local communities and establishing new powerhouses and upgrading the current electricity networks. As part of the initiative, Fenaka Corporation Limited has been conducting numerous projects to establish new buildings and powerhouses across the atolls.
