Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer has stated that Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) and Road Development Corporation (RDC) collectively created 4,000 jobs in the past four years. He made the remarks at the 4th Congress of the Maldivian Democratic Paty (MDP) in response to former President Abdulla Yameen’s claim that the current administration was only able to create 4,000 jobs in total.
Additionally, the current administration has established a job centre to make it easier for individuals to gain employment. The job centre portal was created by the Ministry of Economic Development to easily browse available employment opportunities in the Maldives.
Speaking at the MDP Congress, Minister Ameer highlighted that the purpose of the job centre portal is to connect job seekers with employers and that the portal has 39,297 registered users with 1,117 employers. He added that job centre desks have been established at 32 local councils.
The economic ministry relaunched the job portal last year after making changes as part of the government’s commitment to prioritise Maldivian job seekers. The portal has three categories consisting of job seekers, employers, and training opportunities.
