New powerhouse begins services in Uligan

A new powerhouse has begun electricity services in Uligan, Haa Alifu Atoll, after 26 years. The new powerhouse began services on August 14 after the old and faulty powerhouse was switched off.

Uligan is the second northernmost island in the Maldives and sees a high number of daily tourist visits and yacht traffic, resulting in many visitors arriving on the island for government services and local businesses. Maldives Immigration and other important state institutions are providing services on the island, which also holds social and cultural events.

Uligan had faced challenges in providing electricity using a small powerhouse located within the community, which had caused a major public inconvenience due to the loud generators. The electricity generated from the old powerhouse was also unable to meet the increasing demand for power. A new powerhouse has now been established away from the community with a 250MW generator. The old powerhouse consisted of two 128KW generators and one 80KW generator.

The government has been relocating powerhouses away from local communities and establishing new powerhouses and upgrading the current electricity networks. As part of the initiative, Fenaka Corporation Limited has been conducting numerous projects to establish new buildings and powerhouses across the atolls.
