Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has stated that its presidential candidate will be chosen in a primary election held after the party congress.
At a press conference, Deputy Chairperson of Finance Ahmed Abdulla said MDP will choose its presidential candidate through the process dictated in the party regulations. He said the congress will not include any work related to choosing the presidential candidate or awarding the party ticket, noting that no such related amendment has been proposed for the party congress. He said the primary election will be held soon after the conclusion of the party congress. He further added the leaders of the MDP branches attending the congress are allowed to do so under the party regulations, and that the party is looking into 17 complaints submitted against three branches.
MDP began its 4th Congress with 1,178 members at the social centre in Male’ City. During the three-day congress, members will consider three key issues, which are voting on amendments to the party regulations, debating proposed amendments to the constitution, and debating on the proposed changes to the system of government in the Maldives.
