Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has begun its 4th Congress with 1,178 members.
MDP is holding the three-day congress at the social centre in Male’ City. The main ruling party stated that the 4th Congress has seen the largest number of attendants, which include members of the party’s national council, leaders of the various party branches, as well as councillors, parliamentarians, ministers, and mayors.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, President of MDP Mohamed Nasheed said the main purpose of the party is to work closely with the citizens. He said the congress will be a particularly productive one as members will be able to make the changes they wish to see in the party. He expressed confidence that MDP will continue to be the party that brings progress to the nation.
MDP regulations dictate that members establish party policies, make amendments to regulations, and elect the chairperson at the congress. Three key issues have been scheduled for the 4th Congress, which are voting on amendments to the party regulations, debating proposed amendments to the constitution, and debating on proposed changes to the system of government in the Maldives.
MDP held its first congress in 2005 and celebrated its 17th anniversary on June 26, 2022.
