The Parliament of the Maldives has approved the appointment of ambassadors to India, Malaysia, and the United States (US).
The Parliament approved the appointment of Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed as Ambassador to the US with 46 votes in favour. Ghafoor, a veteran of the Maldivian foreign service, was nominated by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to replace Thilmeeza Hussain as the Ambassador to the US. Ghafoor was recently replaced as the Foreign Secretary of the Maldives by former Ambassador to Germany Ahmed Latheef and transferred to the position of Ambassador-at-Large. He has served in multiple positions in the foreign sector over the years, including the position of ambassador to the US.
Furthermore, the Parliament approved the appointment of the former Chief of Protocol at the Foreign Ministry Ibrahim Shaheeb as the High Commissioner to India with 46 votes. Shaheeb is a career diplomat who has been serving the foreign ministry since 1991.
Additionally, the Parliament approved the appointment of Ali Hussain Didi as the High Commissioner to Malaysia with 46 votes. He served as the Ambassador to the European Union (EU) during former President Mohamed Nasheed’s tenure and has years of experience in the foreign sector.
