AGO evaluates implementation of reforms to justice, legal sector

Attorney General’s Office (AGO) has begun evaluating the implementation of the reforms made to the justice system and the legal sector.

AGO said the purpose of the work is to evaluate the proposed changes to the justice system and the legal sector and to determine the extent to which the relevant institutions have implemented the changes and the challenges they have faced in the implementation. He said AGO will also determine the amount of funding and other assistance needed in implementation.

Furthermore, AGO said it will be split into three stages and that the first stage involves formulating an evaluation paper related to the actions the government is taking to improve the justice system and the legal sector. He said the second stage involves meeting the relevant stakeholders and evaluating their individual contributions to implementing the changes and ascertaining the challenges they have been facing. He added that the third stage involves formulating a plan to further improve the work to implement the changes and holding meetings with international organisations to request their expertise in implementing the changes.

AGO is expected to complete the work in September and will be conducting evaluations on the work of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), Department of Judicial Administration (DJA), Judicial Academy, the courts, Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO), Bar Council of the Maldives (BCM), and the organisations working in the justice system and legal sector.
