President requests withdrawal of proposal to establish parliamentary system

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has requested the withdrawal of the proposal to establish a parliamentary system in the country.

President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Mohamed Nasheed has proposed amendments to the Constitution of the Maldives to be approved by the party congress, in order to establish a parliamentary system.

Speaking to a local television channel, President Solih said he does not support the proposal and requested that it be withdrawn. The president said the proposed amendments will not pass the vote at the MDP congress, and that even if it does, they would have to pass the debate stage at the Parliament of the Maldives. He said the top priority should be to overcome the challenges the country is facing, and that efforts should not be diverted toward changing the system of government.

Furthermore, President Solih said that it was still too soon to discuss changing the system of government and that such discussions should be held after the citizens are educated on the parliamentary system and political debates are held on the subject.
