Weekly COVID-19 cases drop to below 100

Health Protection Agency (HPA) has revealed the weekly COVID-19 cases have dropped to below 100.

The latest statistics published by HPA show the Maldives recorded 98 positive COVID-19 cases from August 7-13. The cases recorded included 18 cases from the Greater Male’ Region, 40 cases from inhabited islands in the atolls, and 40 cases from resorts, industrial islands, and other regions. The health agency revealed that six COVID-19 patients required hospitalisation last week.

The decrease in the number of cases is a significant improvement compared to the last two months. As such, over 1,000 weekly cases were reported in June, while a weekly average of over 100 cases were reported in July.

Since COVID-19 was first detected in the Maldives in March 2020, the country has recorded 184,689 cases. The COVID-19 death toll in the Maldives currently stands at 307.

HPA has urged individuals to immediately get tested if showing signs of COVID-19 symptoms, in order to prevent an outbreak as more people return to work and school after the holidays. The health agency also advised individuals to avoid large gatherings, wear masks outside, and maintain good personal hygiene.
