BML urges customers to not disclose personal information

Bank of Maldives (BML) has urged its customers to be aware of fraudsters calling from mobile numbers and asking for their personal information.

BML stated that individuals have been defrauding its customers after contacting them via mobile phones and email and asking for their personal information in order to transfer money from their bank accounts. BML stated the fraudsters also obtain the internet banking username and password after the victims click their email link.

Additionally, BML stated that recent scams have been conducted after fraudsters pretending to be representatives of state institutions obtain personal information from the victims after claiming that they had won a government-issued flat or rowhouse. The bank stated that such scams are conducted via email and urged customers to refrain from giving out their personal information through such means.

Furthermore, BML stated that the most important step to take is to refrain from giving out any personal information from individuals contacting them through mobile phones and email. The bank stated that customers should strengthen their security related to email and phone verification and not to disclose their card numbers to anyone. It added that customers should also refrain from making any monetary transactions from unverified parties.

BML also urged customers who have been a victim of fraud to immediately report it to the bank and the Maldives Police Service (MPS).
