The governments of the Maldives and Malaysia have signed a mutual recognition agreement on the recognition of domestic driving licence issued by both countries.
The agreement was signed by Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Aishath Nahula and her Malaysian counterpart Dr. Wee Ka Siong on August 12. The agreement will pave way for drivers holding licences of either country to drive motor vehicles in both countries.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister Nahula highlighted that the agreement would ease mobility for Maldivians living in Malaysia and vice versa. She added this symbolises the strength of the relationship between the two countries.
Discussions on establishing the mutual agreement were first held during the meeting held between the transport ministers of the two countries on the sidelines of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) General Assembly held in Montreal, Canada in 2019. Minister Nahula also met with Minister Dr. Wee Ka Siong during her trip to attend the UN High-Level Meeting on Global Road Safety.
