Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has provided Fiber To The Home (FTTH) connections to flats of State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL).
HDC said the connections were provided as part of the planned expansion of the Open Access Network and fiber connections to upcoming developments in Hulhumalé. Residents living in 7,000 Hiya flats have been using FTTH connections to obtain internet and cable TV services. FTTH has several advantages for both the community and the service providers, according to HDC.
The FTTH connection allows service providers to immediately deliver connections to homes without having to wait long for physical cabling to be installed. With FTTH, service providers will increase their customer base and significantly reduce the time and cost of providing services. Similarly, the open access network will enable service providers to provide better services to the people.
HDC believes that this readily available FTTH connectivity in these mixed-residential apartments is a necessity for the residents to obtain the internet, TV, and other similar services quickly as soon as they move in. With the open access network and FTTH, road construction will be reduced. It will also allow for simultaneous services to multiple people on the same network. It will also significantly reduce capital expenditure on infrastructure as well as network maintenance costs for service providers. HDC is taking the initiative to make Hulhumale' a modern digital city.
HDC has achieved a number of goals under the effort. HDC has also introduced a special brand called SmartCom last year to speed up these works.
