US donates over 99,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses

The Government of the United States (US) has donated 99,000 additional doses of COVID-19 vaccines to the Maldives.

Ministry of Health said the US government donated 99,450 mRNA vaccines to the Maldives. The mRNA vaccine is developed using the latest technology to protect against COVID-19 and it includes Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.

The US, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), is supporting the Maldives to distribute and deliver these vaccines across the atolls, train health workers, and encourage people to get vaccinated safely and effectively.

Since the pandemic first broke out in March 2020, USAID has provided more than USD7 million in COVID-19 assistance, plus an in-kind donation of 60 ventilators, to the Maldives. The assistance provided life-saving treatment strengthened clinical care, mobilised critical supplies to strengthen the response, helped expand social protection services, and supported the development of effective economic, fiscal, and monetary measures in response to the pandemic.
