Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has stated that the participants of the Indo-Pacific Environmental Security Forum (IPESF) have visited Huraa, Kaafu Atoll. MNDF stated the participants toured environmentally vulnerable locations in Huraa to better understand the concerns of small island states.
During the tour, the participants visited Huraa’s beach which is in the process of erosion due to climate change, the Huraa mangrove, and the locations of the powerhouse, water supply facility, and waste management area. They were also provided with information on the challenges faced in maintaining the facilities.
Furthermore, the participants observed a cultural display held by the Huraa Island Council and donated books to Huraa School. They also held discussions to sell souvenirs from guesthouses in Huraa at the forum to promote local tourism.
The Government of the United States (US) and the US Indo-Pacific Command partnered with the Maldives to host the IPESF. It is the first time the conference is being held in person since the COVID-19 pandemic. The forum will be held from August 1-4 and will be attended by 100 representatives from 21 countries. The forum was last held in the Maldives in 2014.
