Independence Day celebrations will not be held this year

Ministry of Home Affairs has stated that the official Independence Day celebrations will not be held this year.

The home ministry stated that the flag hoisting ceremony is scheduled for July 26, 0600hrs, but the official Independence Day celebrations will not be held as per previous years, including the float parade which is held every year on Independence Day with floats made by various state-owned companies. The float parade is one of the most popular events held on Independence Day.

The float parade was last held in 2019 with participation from five state-owned companies. The government initially requested companies to join this year’s float parade but later cancelled the event.

However, the national security services have decided to hold a parade to celebrate Independence Day as well as the 130th anniversary of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).
