The National Centre for the Arts (NCA) has announced the Olympus cinema will be reopened in September after completing the renovation and upgrade of the facility.
Renovations began at the largest cinema in the Maldives after it was closed in adherence to the COVID-19 restrictions. The upgrade of the cinema is carried out in two different phases. The first phase, which involved interior and exterior renovations of the building, has now been completed. The second phase, which involves the upgrade of equipment, is currently ongoing.
NCA said installation of new projectors and sound system at Olympus has been contracted to a local company and is now underway. NCA said installation of the new cinema screen will also be contracted soon. NCA added procurement of stage sound and lights control equipment is also underway.
Olympus is a historic building located in Male' City that has premiered numerous movies from the local film industry. The cinema has seen numerous renovations since it opened in 1959 and has continued to face issues of wear and tear due to the age of the building.
The redevelopment of Olympus is carried out under the grant assistance of the Government of India as part of High-Impact Community Development Project (HICDP).
