Applications have been submitted to establish over 400 branches for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Congress to be held on August 19. MDP has stated that the presidents of branches established prior to July 15 will be able to join the party congress.

Deputy Chairperson of MDP Ahmed Abdulla said that applications have been submitted to register 419 branches for the party congress, which includes existing and new branches. He said that he expected over 400 branches will be registered for the party congress after the applications are verified.

Furthermore, President of MDP Mohamed Nasheed has said he will propose amendments to the Constitution of the Maldives at the party congress, in order to establish a parliamentary system in the country. He said he will also propose changes to be made to independent institutions, set a limit to the justices at the Supreme Court of the Maldives, and include constitutional amendments related to decentralisation. He also intends to schedule a date to vote on whether to establish a parliamentary system in the Maldives and to instruct the party congress to abide by the results of the vote.
