The Government of Guatemala has conferred the Grand Cross of the Orden de Antonio Jose de Irisarri to the President of the United Nations General Assembly (PGA) and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, Abdulla Shahid.
The Order of Antonio Jose de Irisarri was founded in 1973 by the Guatemalan government. It was named in honour of the statesman and writer Antonio Jose de Irisarri.
PGA Shahid was awarded the grand cross at a special ceremony in Guetamala for his services and contributions to foreign relations and for his work as the President of the United Nations General Assembly (PGA). As such, he was decorated with the grand cross for his work to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic and his work to solve environmental issues and uphold the principles of human rights. He is also noted for his work to improve the UN, and increase the opportunities for the youth.
PGA Shahid travelled to Guatemala on July 13 to meet senior government officials and visit the UN agencies in the country. He met with President Alejandro Giammattei at the national palace on July 14 and discussed various issues such as climate change, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and the need to improve the UN.
