MPS releases Sri Lankan man arrested during protest in Male’

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has released a Sri Lankan man who was arrested during a protest held by Sri Lankans in Male’ on July 13.

MPS revealed an individual was arrested on July 13 for obstructing police duties and disobeying police orders. MPS stated the man has been released under certain conditions as stipulated by a court order. MPS also revealed the case is under further investigation.

A protest was held by Sri Lankans in Male’ on July 13 to voice their concern over the arrival of Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to the Maldives, to escape a popular uprising over his family’s role in a crippling economic crisis in Sri Lanka. President Rajapaksa, his spouse and two bodyguards have since left the Maldives to Singapore.
