Judges Dheebanaz and Saleem to be appointed to High Court

Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has decided to appoint judges Dheebanaz Fahmy and Mohamed Saleem to the High Court of the Maldives.

JSC stated that they were chosen after the advisory committee for the appointment of judges conducted interviews for all applicants. JSC had received a large number of applications for the vacant positions at the High Court following the resignation of Judge Abdul Rauf Ibrahim and the dismissal of Judge Abdulla Hameed.

Judge Dheebanaz Fahmy holds a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from International Islamic University Malaysia and a Master of Law University of Canterbury, New Zealand. She has 17 years of experience working in the criminal justice system and has been serving as a judge at the Criminal Court since September last year.

Meanwhile, Judge Mohamed Saleem holds a bachelor’s degree from Kulliyathul Dhiraasathul Islamiyya and served as a legal officer at the High Court for 12 years. JSC stated the two judges will take their oath on August 9.

The salary of a High Court judge is USD2,300 with a living allowance of USD1,000 and a risk allowance of USD2,000. The judges also receive medical and phone allowances.
