President inquires about situation in Fenfushi following drowning of youth

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has spoken on the phone to the president of the Fenfushi Island Council in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll and inquired about the situation following an incident resulting in a youth drowning.

During the call, President Solih was also briefed about the situation on the island after it was affected by storm surges caused by the severe weather conditions across the country. The president extended his deepest condolences to the bereaved family of the drowned victim and assured the council that the administration will extend any necessary assistance to the island following the damage caused by storm surges.

Speaking to PSM News, President of Fenfushi Island Council Ahmed Abdul Shukoor said that the drowning victim was one of four youths who had gone to the beach to take photographs on July 1 and that two of them were caught and swept away by a wave. He said that the island residents had come out in search of them as soon as they were alerted and had found and taken them to the nearby hospital.

Additionally, Shukoor said that the Mahibadhoo Hospital had declared one of them dead-on-arrival and that the deceased was a resort worker who had come to Fenfushi for the weekend. He said that the other victim is currently being treated at the hospital.

Maldives Meteorological Service has forecasted heavy rain, high winds, and swell waves for the next three days and has recently issued a white alert for the region between Haa Alifu Atoll and Thaa Atoll.
