Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has decided to dissolve the Maldives Labour and Social Democratic Party (MLSDP) after the party failed to fulfill the membership requirement by the given deadline.
Earlier this year, ECM provided a duration of three months for MLSDP to acquire the minimum membership of 3,000, as stated in the Political Parties Act. The party submitted enough forms to reach the minimum membership of 3,000 by the June 14 deadline. However, following the completion of the verification process for the submitted forms, ECM revealed MLSDP was not able to reach the minimum required membership of 3,000.
ECM stated it has commenced proceedings to dissolve MLSDP as per the Political Parties Act. ECM said the party has been instructed not to conduct any political activities from now on.
In addition to MLSDP, Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) and Maldives Third-Way Democrats (MTD) were also provided the notice to acquire the minimum membership of 3,000 by June 14. These three parties were able to provide enough verified forms to reach the minimum membership of 3,000 and stay on the Political Parties’ Registry.
