Highest Green Tax collected from Kaafu and Alifu Dhaalu Atoll

Ministry of Finance has revealed that Kaafu Atoll and Alifu Dhaalu Atoll generated the largest sums of Green Tax to the state in May.

The Maldives received USD6 million as Green Tax in May as per the statistics of the finance ministry. The amount includes USD5.8 million generated as Green Tax from resorts, USD156,000 from guesthouses, and USD65,000 from hotels.

The statistics also show that USD1.9 million was generated as Green Tax from tourist facilities of Kaafu Atoll, USD651,000 was generated from tourist facilities in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, USD470,000 was generated from Raa Atoll, and USD462,000 was generated from Baa Atoll. Meanwhile, Haa Dhaalu Atoll and Thaa Atoll generated the least as Green Tax in May.

The Green Fund was introduced in 2016 with the aim of tackling environmental issues in the Maldives as per the Tourism Act of the Maldives. As such, USD6 is charged as Green Tax per tourist for each day they spend at a resort or a hotel in the Maldives, while USD3 is charged as Green Tax per tourist for each day they stay at a guesthouse.
