Gov’t to expand jurisdiction of resorts

Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdulla Mausoom has stated that the government is working to expand the jurisdiction of resorts.

Minister Mausoom made the remarks after Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) expressed concern over fishing vessels operating close to the resorts in a way that undermines the safety and privacy of tourists. As such, MATI requested the tourism ministry to expand the jurisdiction of resorts from 500m to 1,000m, noting that the jurisdiction had originally been 1,000m before the previous administration reduced it to the current 500m.

Minister Mausoom said that the government has approved MATI’s request and is currently holding discussions to implement the change. The minister also said that maps will be drafted to show the jurisdiction of the resorts.

The latest statistics of the tourism ministry show that there are currently 165 resorts operating across the Maldives.
