State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has signed an agreement with the Maafushi Island Council in Kaafu Atoll to take over waste management operations of the island.
The agreement was signed by General Manager of STELCO Ahmed Shafeeu and President of Maafushi Island Council Hussain Solah during a special ceremony held on June 22. The ceremony was also attended by the Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna and Managing Director of STELCO Ahmed Shareef.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Managing Director Shareef said STELCO is actively seeking expansion of its business activities across the country. Noting the company is already providing high-quality utilities services, Shareef said STELCO entered the waste management field to provide this service at a high standard. He said STELCO will establish a strong and efficient waste management system in Maafushi, to resolve the current difficulties faced in the island due to waste.
Speaking at the ceremony, President of Maafushi Island Council Hussain Solah said the project will provide a solution for the long-standing issues of waste management in the island. He expressed hope STELCO will be able to provide a high-quality waste management service in the island.
