Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services has contracted a local company to develop a safe shelter in Nilandhoo, Faafu Atoll.
The contract for the project was awarded to Maalaa High Rising Construction Private Limited. The project was awarded at a price of USD1 million, to be completed within 8 months.
The government began transferring children under state care to newly developed safe shelters in the atolls in 2020. As such, children under state care are currently accommodated at safe shelters of Eydafushi in Baa Atoll, Manadhoo in Noonu Atoll, Dhidhdhoo in Haa Alifu Atoll, Funadhoo in Shaviyani Atoll and Fuvahmulah City. The gender ministry stated more than 80 of the approximately 200 children under state care are living at the safe shelters.
