Cabinet condemns incident at National Stadium, launches investigation

The Cabinet of the Maldives has strongly condemned the disruption of the International Yoga Day event held at the Galolhu National Stadium on June 21.

At the meeting at the President’s Office Tuesday afternoon, the cabinet also formed a subcommittee to further look into the matter. The subcommittee is comprised of Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath, Minister of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Mohamed Aslam, Minister of Education Dr. Aishath Ali, Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Yumna Maumoon, Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Ahmed Zahir, Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Ahmed Mahloof, and Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services Aishath Mohamed Didi.

The International Yoga Day event was planned for 0630hrs on June 21 by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment and the Indian High Commission in the Maldives. Several individuals gathered nearby and protested against the event, broke through the police barricades, and entered the stadium. The police have so far arrested six men in connection with the disruptions.
