Health Protection Agency (HPA) has revealed that COVID-19 cases have increased in the past week and that many of the cases involved hospitalisations.

Statistics published by HPA show that 405 individuals tested positive for COVID-19 in the past week. This includes 231 individuals from the Greater Male’ Region, 95 individuals from the atolls, and 79 from other regions. A total of 17 individuals were hospitalised in the past week and the total number of recorded COVID-19 cases in the Maldives has risen to 180,384. One death was also recorded in the past week, increasing the total number of deaths from COVID-19 to 300.

Additionally, doctors have expressed concern over hospital patients testing positive for COVID-19. In a tweet, a Physician at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) Dr. Mohamed Ali said admitted cases are becoming positive for COVID-19, which meant that the number of COVID-19 cases in the community is very high. He said those who visit patients in the hospital must be cautious and must try to limit visits as well.

Furthermore, HPA has advised individuals to wear masks outside and take sanitary measures to reduce the likelihood of contracting COVID-19, especially during the upcoming holidays.
