More than 7,000 people show interest working in Census

The Maldives Bureau of Statistics (MBS) has revealed more than 7,000 people have sent in applications to work in Census 2022.

MBS has issued two advertisements for the recruitment of census workers. MBS issued an announcement in February seeking 4,400 enumerators for the census, including 2,409 enumerators for the Greater Male’ Region and 1,991 enumerators for the atolls. The bureau revealed registration of enumerators is still ongoing, noting another 1,826 enumerators are needed for the Greater Male’ Region and 269 enumerators for the atolls.

MBS stated enumerators will receive a daily allowance for every day they work or undergo training. As such, enumerators will receive a daily allowance of USD32 for every work day and USD6.5 for every training day.

MBS said the second round of recruitment has received a good response. MBS said the deadline for applications expired on June 12 and more than 7,000 people from across the country have submitted applications to participate in the census. The agency said it is preparing to start the screening process for the applicants.

Meanwhile, more than 1,000 people applied for the recruitment of trainers. MBS has decided to train enumerators from July through September.

The population census is a count of all individuals and household units across the country. During the census, data will be collected on the income and living conditions of the public. The last census in the Maldives was conducted in 2014.

The population census for 2022 is set to be conducted in September. The full report of the census will be published on National Statistics Day, which falls on October 20.
