PGA conferred the principal order of Dominican Republic

President of the United Nations General Assembly (PGA) Abdulla Shahid has been conferred with the principal order of the Dominican Republic.

PGA Shahid was conferred the Duarte, Sanchez and Mella Order of Merit, Grand Cross, and Silver Plate by Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic Roberto Alvarez. The principal order of the Dominican Republic was established in 1931. Shahid was decorated with the principal order for his work at the United Nations (UN) to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic and his work to solve environmental issues and uphold the principles of human rights. He is also noted for his work to improve the UN.

The order is divided into seven grades and is decorated with laurels representing the founding fathers of the Dominican Republic. It is awarded for distinguished services to the country.

PGA Shahid, who is the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, travelled to the Dominican Republic on June 16 to meet President Luis Abinader and to further develop the diplomatic relations between the UN and the Caribbean nation. He also met with the foreign minister of the Dominican Republic to discuss sustainable development and observed the country’s work to develop its tourism sector.
