MTCC begins Kamadhoo harbour upgrade project

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has commenced the Kamadhoo harbour upgrade project. The existing harbor in Kamadhoo, Baa Atoll is being expanded and renovated as part of the project.

MTCC mobilised the project site for the Kamadhoo harbour upgrade project this month. MTCC said dredging for the harbour expansion will be done first. As such, the dredging of the west side of the existing harbour has been started by MTCC.

President of Kamadhoo Island Council Hassan Zareer said the project will address the space constraint faced by the harbour. He said the council constantly receives complaints about the lack of space at the harbour.

The current harbour in Kamadhoo was built by Villa Group with assistance from the residents of the island 25 years ago. The government decided to upgrade the harbour due to space constraints and deteriorating conditions. Currently, the Kamadhoo harbour is 400ft long and 150ft wide.

MTCC will carry out dredging of 25,404cbm for the harbour basin and construct a 180m breakwater as part of the expansion. The project also involves the construction of an 826m revetment, a 346m quay wall, an 11m ramp, a 1,730sqm pavement, 70 mooring rings, and 17 harbour lights. MTCC is tasked with completing the project within 400 days at a cost of USD3 million.
