President seeks approval to appoint high commissioners

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has requested the Parliament of the Maldives to approve the appointment of Ahmed Thasmeen Ali as the High Commissioner to Singapore and Ibrahim Shaheeb as the High Commissioner to India.

Thasmeen is a former parliamentarian who is also the former leader of the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP). President Solih nominated him to replace the current High Commissioner to Singapore Shaheeb, who is the former Chief of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The president is also seeking to replace High Commissioner to India Hussain Niyaz with Shaheeb.

Additionally, President Solih requested the Parliament to approve Ali Hussain as High Commissioner to Malaysia. The position was left vacant following the resignation of High Commissioner Visam Ali in April. Visam was appointed as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Maldives to Malaysia on March 26, 2019.
