The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has mobilised the project site for the Kamadhoo harbour upgrade project.
A team from MTCC has arrived in Kamadhoo, Baa Atoll, with the equipment and resources required for the project. The island council cited MTCC as stating that the surveys have been completed and fieldwork will begin without delay.
The Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure contracted MTCC to upgrade the harbour of Kamadhoo in January. Under the project, MTCC will carry out dredging of 25,404cbm for the harbour basin and construct a 180m breakwater. The project also involves the construction of an 826m revetment, a 346m quay wall, an 11m ramp, a 1,730sqm pavement, 70 mooring rings and 17 harbour lights. MTCC is tasked with completing the project within 400 days at a cost of USD3 million.
The current harbour in Kamadhoo was built by Villa Group with assistance from the residents of the island 25 years ago. The government decided to upgrade the harbour due to space constraints and deteriorating conditions.
The government has so far completed harbour development projects in five islands in Baa Atoll, and Hithadhoo Island Council stated that its harbour project will begin at the same time as the fieldwork for the Kamadhoo harbour upgrade project.
