Minister of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Mohamed Aslam has stated the high-speed ferry service will pave the way for economic development. He made the remarks while speaking at the virtual ceremony held to officially commence the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) high-speed ferry service in Haa Dhaalu Atoll.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Aslam said that countries can only develop after establishing a fast and efficient travel and transport system and that the RTL service will develop the country’s economy and assist in developing the decentralised system. He noted the country is made up of naturally distant and isolated islands but that the high-speed ferry service will allow island residents to establish better social and economic ties.
Also at the ceremony, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Aishath Nahula said that decentralisation and economic development requires an efficient travel and transport system that is interconnected with land, sea, and air routes. She said the RTL service is a crucial step in paving the way for the country’s development. She detailed that the RTL service was established with safety and ease of travel as the highest priorities and that it shows the administration is committed to its transport policy.
Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) commenced the RTL service in Haa Dhaalu Atoll in Zone 1 of the National Public Ferry Network, which is a large-scale project that introduces efficient, affordable, convenient, and sustainable passenger and cargo ferry services to all administrative islands of the country. In line with the Decentralisation Act, it aims to facilitate inclusive regional development by connecting people and services, accelerating social and economic growth, improving efficiency in the delivery of public services, and improving mobility and accessibility for all citizens in all areas of the nation.
