Shafau elected as MMC President

Mohamed Shafau Hassan has been elected as the President of Maldives Media Council (MMC). He was elected at a council meeting held on June 8 with nine members voting in favour.

Shafau was elected after Sahubaan Fahmy resigned from his position as the president. Sahubaan resigned from his position following two attempts to take no-confidence votes to remove him as president, due to an ongoing police investigation on alleged money laundering carried out by a company co-owned by him. He resigned shortly after a second attempt was made to take a no-confidence vote. However, he will remain a member of MMC.

The main function of MMC is to preserve, promote and maintain the freedom of the press, within the legal framework of the country and to encourage the growth of a sense of responsibility, public service, ethics, and a high standard of professionalism among all those engaged in the profession of journalism.
