Japan extends USD5.1 million grant to enhance operational capacity of MPS

The Government of Japan has provided a grant aid USD5.1 million to the Government of Maldives to enhance the operational capacity of Maldives Police Service (MPS).

The Exchange of Notes for the grant was signed on May 30 by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Khaleel and the Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives Takeuchi Midori during a ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on May 30.

This grant aid will be utilised to further strengthen the resources and operational capabilities of the Marine Police and Traffic Police of MPS. This includes the provision of marine vessels which will be used in countering terrorism, drug trafficking and other illicit activities in the maritime domain. The grant aid will also be used to procure the modern traffic management equipment for Traffic Police to improve the enforcement of road-side regulations and services to the general public.

Highlighting the generosity of Japan, State Minister Khaleel thanked the Government of Japan for the grant aid, and emphasised the close and friendly relations that exists between the two countries. He further mentioned that such projects reflect Japan’s continued role as one of the key partners in the Maldives’ development journey.

The signing ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maldives Police Service and the officials from the Embassy of Japan.
