MDP to hold party congress on August 19

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to hold the party congress on August 19.

MDP made the decision at the first national council meeting held after electing Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail as the new party chairperson. At the meeting, MDP made the decision to postpone the party congress from August 4 to 19 and to update the party register by giving members 30 days to register at the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM). MDP stated that only members in the ECM register will be allowed to participate in the party congress.

President of MDP Mohamed Nasheed has said he will propose amendments to the Constitution of the Maldives at the party congress, in order to establish a parliamentary system in the country. Nasheed said he will propose changes to be made to independent institutions, set a limit to the justices at the Supreme Court, and schedule a date to vote on whether to establish a parliamentary system in the Maldives.
