FADs placed in all areas of the Maldives

Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture has placed Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) in all areas of the Maldives as pledged by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

FADs are anchored or drifting objects that are placed in the ocean to attract fish. The fisheries ministry placed a FAD 10 miles west of Thulhaadhoo, Baa Atoll, achieving the pledge of the president.

The presidential pledge is to place five FADs in different parts of the country. The FADs were placed 4.5 miles north of Kaashidhoo in Kaafu Atoll, outside of Hirilandhoo in Thaa Atoll, nine miles north of Vilufushi in Thaa Atoll, eight miles southeast of Gaadhiffushi in Thaa Atoll, and the last one placed 10 miles west of Thulhaadhoo in Baa Atoll.

The ministry revealed a special number has been given to identifying the FADs and that it is the first time FADs were placed in these areas. The fisheries ministry aims to expand the FADs network to reduce fisheries expenses.
