The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has submitted a case to the Maldives Police Service (MPS) regarding former President Abdulla Yameen allegedly threatening a judge at a political campaign event.
Secretary-General Izmeera Shiham said the JSC takes threats to judges seriously and that it has requested MPS to investigate the incident, adding that it takes such action in other similar cases. JSC requested the MPS to investigate Yameen for threatening Justice of the Supreme Court Ali Rasheed. The commission requested the MPS to ensure the security of Justice Rasheed and to investigate Yameen over any criminal violation. MPS stated that it is now investigating the incident.
Former President Yameen threatened Justice Rasheed while speaking at a campaign event held for the candidate representing Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) in the by-election for the Villimale’ seat on the Women’s Development Committee (WDC) of Male’ City. At the event, Yameen had also questioned the experience and credentials of Justice Rasheed and threatened to imprison senior officials of the national security services.
