Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has begun the land reclamation project in Hirilandhoo, Thaa Atoll.
Scope of work for the project includes dredging and reclamation of 25ha, construction of rock boulder revetment of 1,080m, and the construction of 80m groyne.
The lack of land is an issue for the growing population on small islands. Hirilandhoo is an island of 29h and has a population of over 1,200. Compared to other islands in the atoll, Hirilandhoo does extensive industrial work such as making fish products and fiber works.
The land reclamation project in Hirilandhoo was awarded to MTCC in late 2020. MTCC revealed the project will be completed within 18 months at a cost of USD6.79 million.
