Maldives and the US discusses opening designated embassies

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has discussed opening designated embassies in the Maldives and the US. He held the discussions during a meeting with the Chargé d’affaires of the US to the Maldives Andrea Appell.

During the meeting held at the President’s Office, President Solih and Chargé d’affaires Appell discussed the process of opening designated embassies in the Maldives and in the US, respectively. The president said that it was a step that would improve cooperation between the two countries and further enhance the Maldives-US relations. He also thanked the Chargé d’affaires for the continued assistance from the US in all sectors, particularly noting the aid provided during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Additionally, Chargé d’affaires Appell highlighted how the two countries had established diplomatic relations over 60 years ago and said that the US was proud of the longstanding relationship. She noted the outstanding position the Maldives holds globally, despite the country’s size. They also discussed ways to improve the country’s economy and defence and security in the region.
