MFDA receives complaints of rotten eggs being sold

Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has revealed it has received a large number of complaints of rotten eggs being sold at stores in Male’ City.

MFDA warned that selling rotten eggs would lead to an increase in illnesses from contaminated food, resulting in a public health crisis. As such, the authority stated that eggs should be frozen and stored for no more than three months and stored at room temperature for no more than 28 days, adding that eggs will have a chance of becoming rotten beyond that period.

MFDA advised stores to disclose the expiry date of eggs they have put up for sale and to keep them in cold storage for the recommended period. It also advised customers to determine the expiry date of eggs before purchase.
