Kamadhoo Island Council has stated the project to upgrade the island's harbour will begin in June.
The council cited Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) as stating that the fieldwork for the project will begin after the site is mobilised at the start of next month.
Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure contracted MTCC to upgrade the harbour of Kamadhoo in January. The contract was signed by Director General at the Planning Ministry Fathimath Shaana Farooq and CEO of MTCC Adam Azim.
Under the project, MTCC will carry out dredging of 25,404cbm for the harbour basin, and construct a 180m breakwater. The project also involves the construction of an 826m revetment, 346m quay wall, 11m ramp, 1,730sqm pavement, 70 mooring rings and 17 harbour lights. MTCC is tasked with completing the project within 400 days at a cost of USD3 million.
The current harbour was built by Villa Group and the residents of the island 25 years ago. The government decided to upgrade the harbour due to space constraints and deteriorating conditions.
