Kendhikulhudhoo Island Council begins handing over land plots to the respective citizens.
The island council stated that seven land plots have been handed over to the owners so far. A total of 227 land plots are to be handed over in Kendhilkulhudhoo, including 151 land plots from Kendhikolhu and 76 land plots from Kulhudhoo. The council stated that the land plots span 3,000sqft that are 60ft by 50ft and that 29 land plots were given to individuals who wish to move to the island.
The island council is distributing the land plots to residents under the authority of the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure, and the Land and Survey Authority in order to solve the housing issues in Kendhikulhudhoo. The land plots are being handed over to residents under the age of 35 who were chosen by lottery in 2020. The council stated that work to hand over the land plots was delayed after the previous council designated some plots that were not adequate for building houses.
The geography of Kendhikulhudhoo is unique with mangrove areas, and the council had to re-formulate the land use plan and re-designate some land plots to more stable foundations. Kendhikulhudhoo has a population of 1,981 residents with 1,367 currently residing on the island in 271 households.
