MTCC begins reclaiming land for Alifushi Airport

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has begun land reclamation for the airport development project in Alifushi, Raa Atoll.

Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure awarded the project to MTCC in late 2021. The contract for the project was signed by the Director-General of the Planning Ministry Fathimath Shaana Farooq and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTCC Adam Azim. The project, worth USD29.2 million, is the largest infrastructure development project undertaken by a Maldivian company.

As part of the project, MTCC is tasked with reclaiming 50.5ha of land in Alifushi, including 40.5ha allocated for the development of the airport. The remaining 10ha have been allocated for housing and other development projects. Alifushi Island Council has asked the residents to clear the area to be reclaimed as any remaining items will be demolished after 10 days.

The airport to be developed in Alifushi will include a 1,200m runway, taxiway, and apron, along with a terminal building and other facilities required for the airport. The scope of the project also includes coastal protection of the airport development area. The project was contracted to be completed within two years.
