President congratulates Australia Prime Minister Designate

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has congratulated Prime Minister-Designate Anthony Albanese.

In a tweet, President Solih congratulated Albanese and said the Maldives and Australia enjoy excellent relations going back decades. The president noted that Australia is a key development partner of the Maldives and said he was looking forward to working with Albanese to build upon these strong foundations.

Australia’s Labour Party leader Anthony Albanese was declared the winner in Australia's federal election on May 21, replacing Scott Morrison to become the country's prime minister. Albanese will be sworn in as prime minister after his Labour Party claimed its first electoral win since 2007. He has promised big changes after nearly 10 years of conservative rule, from stepping up climate action to boosting Indigenous rights and cracking down on political corruption.

Maldives and Australia established diplomatic relations on January 25, 1974, and both governments have been working to further strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries since then. As such, Australia has decided to establish a High Commission in the Maldives to support the commitment of both countries to democratic institutions and enhance cooperation with multilateral, Commonwealth, and regional organisations.
