Maldives Media Council (MMC) has conducted a workshop for journalists working in the coverage of the judiciary.
The workshop, titled Court Reporting Workshop, was conducted on May 21. The workshop was held at Iskandhar Koshi in Male'.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the workshop, President of MMC Sahubaan Fahmy said journalists working on the coverage of courts and the judiciary are relatively few in the Maldives. Noting there are many young journalists in the country, Sahubaan said it is important that young journalists are trained to perform their jobs in accordance to the local laws and regulations. He said the aim of the workshop is to provide the required information to court journalists on judicial procedures and regulations.
Speaking further, Sahubaan noted MMC is also working on facilitating workshops and training for journalists in other fields. As such, he said MMC is undertaking efforts to facilitate such opportunities both locally and from abroad.
Sessions at the Court Reporting Workshop were conducted by officials from the Department of Judicial Administration (DJA), Judicial Service Commission (JSC), the Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) and the Bar Council of the Maldives. In addition, a session was also conducted by an experienced journalist in the field of judicial coverage.
MMC said the workshop was held to enhance the skills of court coverage and to ensure the standards of court coverage are maintained by journalists.
