Gov't seeking public opinion on developing hazardous waste management facility in Addu

The project to establish a hazardous waste management facility in Addu City has been opened for public opinion.

Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Technology announced the development of the facility under the Eliminating Persistent Organic Pollutants through Sound Management of Chemicals project. The ministry has scheduled the fieldwork for the development of the facility at the Hithadhoo Regional Waste Management Centre for July.

The environment ministry has been conducting a survey to gather information on the type and amount of hazardous waste produced by households and workplaces in Addu City and the current procedures followed at domestic level to manage hazardous waste. The survey also aims to gather public opinion on charging a fee for management of hazardous waste. Residents of Addu City can submit their complaints related to the establishment of the facility by May 27.

In addition to a hazardous waste management facility, Addu City will also have a waste-to-energy plant at the regional waste management facility of the city. The environment ministry stated the waste-to-energy plant will burn 50 tonnes of waste per day and generate 1.5MW of electricity per hour in Addu. Installation of the waste-to-energy plant is currently ongoing.
